First-year students – This is how you venture into your new study adventure

To all new first-year students at higher education institutions countrywide: welcome! You can ask any former student; everyone will agree that your student years will be the best years of your life.

At first, this new chapter can feel like a yo-yo ride. You are excited to become a qualified specialist in your field of choice, but at the same time you are scared about the new environment and the requirements.

The most important piece of advice that I can give you, as first-year student, is that although studies after school are different than school, it does not mean that it is more challenging. Yes, you are going to find yourself in unchartered waters for a while, but you have the opportunity to make your study home a place of growth and commitment. The secret is to find a healthy balance between academics and your student life.

Follow these three hints on how to take on your new study adventure:

  • Utilise your institution’s orientation programme

Your institution’s orientation programme for new students is an important early learning school. This programme focuses on equipping first-years with knowledge and skills to make their entry and engagement into university life as effective as possible. In addition to this, students are equipped to lead a full student life by participating in art and culture, sport, recreation, clubs/associations and other available opportunities. This also includes various training or leadership development opportunities.

During this time solid friendships are forged, and lifelong relationships are formed.

  • Get to know your lecturers and fellow students

The development of relationships and support networks are very important, especially in terms of your specific field of study. Lecturers have experience and specialist knowledge that can benefit students. Make an effort to introduce yourself to them – they can act as valuable mentors in your career adventure, whilst addressing your uncertainties and providing you with guidance. Fellow and senior students fulfil the role of academic mainstays that venture into the learning process with you.

Remember that the responsibility to perform and conscientiously prepare is entirely your own. Utilise this network to continuously tackle and achieve your goals.

  • Use available student support structures

This structure has the goal to serve as a one-stop support service – if you need support for an academic matter, feeling emotionally vulnerable or scratching your head about personal money matters or the development of a soft skill.

It is important that you reach your full potential during your student years and that you are equipped with more than theoretical knowledge.

May this year be the start of a new adventure and an exciting future for you. Grab each opportunity and strive to not just be an expert in your chosen specialist field, but also someone making a difference and a builder of your community’s future.
