Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences

The Postgraduate Diploma in Taxation is intended for students who want to pursue a career in taxation. The student gains the knowledge and skills required to become a tax expert capable of ensuring organisational and individual compliance with the requirements of the South African Revenue Service and the National Treasury. The successful student is able to analyse developments in the various fields of taxation.

The aim of the Postgraduate Diploma in Management Accounting is to prepare students as management accountants in the workplace. The programme will equip students with insight into the world of financial management from a corporate and individual perspective, with an emphasis on improving decision-making in a competitive environment.

The Bachelor of Commerce in Management Accounting equips the student to understand and apply the principles of management accounting in practice. It equips students with knowledge and skills in principles and practice of management accounting, financial management, financial accounting, business ethics and corporate governance.

The Bachelor of Commerce in Economics and Law equips the student to understand the principles of economics and law and to apply these principles in practice. It equips students with knowledge and skills in principles and practice of economics, financial management, financial accounting, various aspects of jurisprudence, the South African legal system, and application in practice. The student is also prepared for further studies in economics or law.

The Bachelor of Commerce in Financial Planning equips the student to understand the principles of economics, investment management and financial planning and to apply these principles in practice. It equips students with knowledge and skills in principles and practice of economics, financial management, financial accounting, various aspects of business management and investment management, and related disciplines. The student is also prepared for further studies in economics or financial management.

 

The Bachelor of Commerce in Business Management enables the student to understand and apply the principles of management in all the departments of a company in practice. It is therefore a comprehensive programme that will give the student a broader insight into every aspect of a business enterprise and also how to set up and successfully manage their own business enterprise.

The uniqueness of the programme lies in the fact that it can open doors for you in every department of a company due to the nature of the modules in this programme.

 

The aim of the programme is to equip students with the latest business management knowledge, skills and competencies to analyse and solve problems within the global business management context. Furthermore, it prepares students to use research methodology and techniques to conduct research within the business management field, write and present a research report.

 

The Advanced Diploma in Project Management equips the student to understand the principles of project management and to apply these principles in practice, so that projects can be successfully developed and managed. It equips students with knowledge and skills in project management, project execution and control, time planning, cost management and project quality and risk management.

 

The Higher Certificate in Office Administration equips the student to understand office administration practice and to be able to carry out administrative functions effectively. Knowledge of administrative practice enables students to develop a theoretical and practical understanding of the context and associated strategies relevant to scheduling and coordination, office systems, reporting, organisation and data assurance in the appropriate environment.

 

The Higher Certificate in Accounting equips the student to understand accounting practice and to be able to perform accounting functions successfully. Knowledge of accounting practice enables students to develop a theoretical and practical understanding of the context and associated strategies relevant to simple financial and costing processes and the associated environment.

Faculty of Humanities

 

The BSocSci (Politics, Philosophy and Economics) programme enables the student to view contemporary issues through an interdisciplinary approach. The political focus in this degree addresses both local and international aspects, which ensures that the student has a broad understanding of the subject; the philosophy component promotes knowledge and insight from a foundation of classical Greek philosophy to today’s practice of this discipline; while the economic focus ensures that students understand how the economy works in general and can apply it within a specific philosophical context.

Faculty of Education

 

The aim of the Postgraduate Education Certificate in Senior Phase and Further Education and Training Teaching is to give students initial professional training with a focus on developing the necessary pedagogical content knowledge, skills and experience in the workplace. These skills will enable students to apply their learning as a novice teacher in schools where different contexts exist.

Faculty of Law

 

Akademia’s LLB programme is aimed at producing competent, skilled and dynamic law graduates who are equipped with a thorough knowledge and understanding of applicable legal principles. It provides the necessary preparation for study at master’s level and develops research capacity in the methodology and techniques of the subject area.

The Bachelor of Commerce in Economics and Law equips the student to understand the principles of economics and law and to apply these principles in practice. The programme therefore enables students to make a valuable contribution to the world of financial and management accounting practices and in the process enables them to continue discipline-based studies.

The BCom degree in Business Management enables the student to understand and apply the principles of management in all the departments of a company in practice. It is therefore a comprehensive programme that will give the student a broader insight into every aspect of a business enterprise and also how to set up and successfully manage their own business enterprise.

Faculty of Humanities

The programme equips students with in-depth theoretical knowledge and advanced practical and critical skills to fulfil a critical role as well-rounded, skilled and adaptable media and communication practitioners in changing and challenging global, political, technological and social contexts.

The BAHons in Media and Communication gives students the opportunity to specialise in Strategic Communication Management or Journalism. In both streams, the dynamic relationship between theory and practice is emphasised throughout, so that graduated students are not only skilled, but they can also critically reflect on the media and communication industry in order to make meaningful and positive contributions.

 

The BA (Communication and Journalism) degree is a specialised programme that equips students with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills to pursue successful careers in the journalism and communication industry. Students are equipped and challenged to make decisions, think critically about matters and adapt quickly in a dynamic professional environment that changes at a rapid pace.

The BA (Language Studies) degree is a unique programme that equips students with theoretical and practical knowledge to pursue successful careers in the public and private sectors and also in academia. Although students in this programme specialise in language studies, they are exposed to a broad spectrum of related disciplines. The programme emphasises research skills, critical thinking skills and analytical and problem-solving skills in the context of language studies.

Faculty of Education

The BEd (Foundation Phase Teaching) programme will equip the prospective teaching students with teaching knowledge so that they can fill their places in the school as professional and qualified foundation phase teachers. This programme will develop all eleven beginner teacher competencies that include the integrated, pedagogical and curriculum knowledge of all four foundation phase subjects. Beginner teachers will be able to create a learning environment in any grade R-3 classroom in which learners can learn effectively by themselves, but also together with others and relate what they have learned to their lives, inside and outside the school context.

The BEd (Intermediate Phase Teaching) programme will equip the prospective teaching student with teaching knowledge that will distinguish him/her from, for example, an economist or an engineer. The education knowledge will equip a student to create a learning environment that will enable learners to learn effectively by themselves, but also together with others and also to relate what they have learned to their lives, inside and outside the school context.

Faculty of Natural Sciences

The aim of the BSc (Computer Sciences) programme is to enable students to graduate as creative, critical graduates in the Computer Sciences. The programme is of such a nature that graduates will be nationally competitive and internationally relevant. The curriculum includes Mathematics, Statistics and Physics. Students are thus equipped to make an interdisciplinary contribution. Currently there is a great demand for computer scientists. Professions that can be practiced by computer scientists include the processing and analysis of data, design of systems for different applications, the implementation of mathematical and theoretical underpinnings of graphics, artificial intelligence designs and a contribution to education.

The purpose of the BSc (Mathematical Sciences) programme is to equip students with a solid foundation in mathematics, applied mathematics and mathematical statistics. In the third year of study, the student has the choice to specialise in two of the latter sciences. In addition, a good foundation for the computer sciences is also laid in the first year of studies. Students acquire the skills to interpret practical problems in mathematical terms. The programme offers students a strong basis to prepare for a career in education, mathematical sciences, analytical social and natural sciences, as well as in the financial industry.
